Tustin Autumn SOLD

oil 9x12 inches, framed. Click to Purchase My painting submitted to the Tustin Plein Air Competition. It received an Honorable Mention. To be very honest, sales yesterday were dismal. There were a lot of nice comments on my work, but almost everyone kept their cash and credit cards in their wallets. After a day like that I get discouraged. I ask myself if I'm devoting myself to making things that nobody wants. Seriously. Life is short. I apologize to those who say "don't put anything negative on your blog." I think it's important to be honest about the struggles of being a painter and a human being. Think I'll take a few days off from painting.

  1. Congratulations on your Honorable Mention, Karen. Please don't beat yourself up about your lack of sales, its certainly not about your paintings, they are outstanding...I know, I was lucky enough to see them!

  2. Karen, you are a fabulous artist, and a role model to so many other artists. Take a break if you must, but know that... I for one, will be waiting to see what you paint next. Don't paint to sell, paint from your heart!

  3. Hey Karen- Get back up! I've taken a couple weeks off for the same reason but don't you fall down too! I suggest you go to this site and let yourself take 6 minutes to be lifted up.

  4. Hi Karen - even though I'm one of the ones who told you not to say negative things in your blog - I also think one should be honest, and if that's negative, then so be it! On another note, your painting is great. But more importantly, don't paint for others, paint for yourself. The minute you become concerned about what others think, you compromise yourself as an artist.

  5. Karen,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and reminding us all that we're not alone in our often unappreciated creative lives. Your paintings are lovely and from the heart. Paint on,
    Twinkle

  7. Hi Karen,
Your discouragement is understandable and justified. I am proud of you for being honest about it. I don't know that anything I have to say will help but I have to tell you that you are NOT making things that nobody wants. I have so often looked at your paintings and wished to own at least one of them and hopefully I will sometime. I am sure lots of other people feel the same way. All of a sudden and soon, something will shift. My dad used to tell me that when you feel this way, sometimes you are very close to a breakthrough so keep moving! You are only in trouble if you stand still. Sorry to be so longwinded but I so admire you as an artist and blogger.

  8. I think other artists appreciate the Honesty...I can't help but believe that I'm not the ONLY artist having a hard time selling work. Hoping things change after the election.
So there, someone appr. your honesty and your beautiful work.

  11. I like your honesty. It is important to discuss or just put it out there. I really enjoy your work. Sales don't change the beauty of your work. Sales are like the weather, unpredictable. Really...thanks for this post.
