oil 8x8 inches magnify Blue Chair Bakery on Marine Ave. has the most delicious cinnamon rolls! I started painting during the morning overcast and added the light near the end of my painting session. Cars and people came and went. I snapped shots of people on the bench as I painted and added them in last. No time to eat a cinnamon roll, but I treated myself the next morning. oil 9x12 inches magnify Here's a back of the car shot, the only one I have of the finished painting! We were painting like crazy, framing in the backs of our cars and hanging them wet in the gallery. Sometimes I'd take it off the wall the next day to tweak it a bit the back of my car. In the scene, the cars were a big challenge. Work trucks kept coming and going. Last Light, Balboa Blvd. -sold

oil 9x12 magnify I haven't painted many nocturnes, so this was extra fun. For those of you who know the area, I took this shot while walking toward the pier parking lot, standing on the corner by the drugstore. See the tree "on fire" in the distance? It's planted in the meridian way, way up the street, so it's a big one. I think it's a Norfolk Island Pine. I always look for that grand old tree when I go to Balboa. I love that tree and felt happy to put it in my painting. OTHER NEWS: Associated Artists Of The Inland Empire's 50th Show is coming up September 5-7 at the Cultural Center, Victoria Gardens, Rancho Cucamonga. I'll be demonstrating all three days. Come on out if you can...beautiful venue, great variety of art, and over 350 works. Soon we leave on an RV trip from SoCal to northern Oregon. I have a small backlog of paintings to share if the wifi's good. We're due for some R&R, but I do hope to paint and post along the way.

oil 12x9 inches not for sale When the kids were little we made frequent trips to Balboa Island. Here in the Fun Zone we'd visit the arcade where our little girl got really good at Skeeball. We'd take the three car ferry to the island and let the kids swim in the bay. I took the photo for this painting about a year ago. It's one of those rare places that thankfully, hasn't changed much. Lots of nostalgia, and I like how the painting turned out too. Fair News: I'll be demonstrating as well as volunteering in the Gallery Store. Here is my basic schedule for demonstrating: Labor Day-10-7, Fair closed on all other Mondays and Tuesdays, Wednesdays-4pm to 10pm, Thursdays-10am to 5pm, Fridays-10am-4pm, Saturdays-10am to 4pm, Sundays-12pm-7pm(excluding the 16th).

North On Haven

oil 8x8 inches Click to Purchase While driving up Haven Ave. last week at dusk, the light was so beautiful. I saw everything in yellows and violets. At a red light I snapped a photo. My red traffic light arched way into the center of that beautiful sky, so I left it out. I toned my canvas with Indian yellow and while I left some showing in the sky, it is a lot more subtle than this image shows. The sun was trying to burn through the clouds, but it was still dark enough for the glow of tail lights and street lights. I tried to capture this in-between state of light. I love those San Francisco streets that scoop upward in the distance. The buses and cars move the eye from side to side, so I tried to use line to direct the eye into the distance and up the hill.
