Lantana Jar SOLD

This one may be more about the jar than the flowers. I don't know. I like the little fallen bits the best. Painted after 12 days of almost no painting, I felt awkward. Pretty much always I paint the objects first and then the surface and background. On this one I wiped out the surface and backgound and did a do-over. You would think that if one can paint flowers, leaves and a jar, the flat surface and background would be easy....but noooooo! I don't get that. Keeps me humble.

Hummingbird & Lantana

The hummingbird commission is done after just some very minor finishing touches: correct the shape of the beak, add darks and lights in the greenery. This is somebody's Christmas present. Hope it gives them a sunny feeling in their cold, snowy winter.

I prefer to paint from life, but a few months ago I cut back my gigantic lantana bush until it looked like locust had come. So with no fresh lantana, I used my two little paintings of lantana as reference. Couldn't get the hummingbird to hold still, so I used a teeny tiny calendar picture. I'll post the finished version tomorrow.

We have a huge lantana bush in a corner of our yard that migrated from the neighbor's yard. It attracts butterflies and hummingbirds, and the delicate multicolored blossoms are full of one of my favorite color combinations: pink and orange. It was a good challenge to suggest the structure of the blossoms without overworking. I hope this jar full conveys a sunny, happy feeling.
