I painted this piece originally in 2017.  Recently I made some major changes, mostly to the surface and background in the interest of better color harmony.   I also added the fallen debris.  Normally I'd post the "before" photo, but I lost a lot of my files when my computer crashed a couple of years ago.  I hope you've had a nice weekend.  I got my second Covid vaccination on Friday and I'm almost back to normal today.  Stay well, my friends!

On a day when I was working at Mission Fine Art in San Juan Capistrano, I brought my paints and these still life elements with me.  The background color made for a nice harmonious color scheme, and the shadow shapes added interest.  I love this mustardy yellow or yellow ochre in a painting.

oil 12x12 inches I'm delighted to announce the acceptance of this piece into The American Impressionist Society's 21st Annual National Juried Exhibition. Illume Gallery, St. George, Utah October 22-November 21, 2020. I'm especially excited to be included for two reasons: St. George is a drivable distance, so I'll be able to attend the AIS festivities and paint-outs for the first time. Here's hoping COVID has died down by then! Secondly, this is the 5th consecutive AIS show I have been included in, so in the fall I can apply for AIS Signature Status. Demo For Rancho

oil 12x12 inches This was a demonstration I painted from life for Associated Artists of the Inland Empire in Rancho Cucamonga. I was able to complete it mostly within the 1 1/2 hours allotted to me. It's a fresh-looking painting because I had to paint quickly and leave my strokes alone. This is a great exercise for any painter who wants their work to be loose and fresh, not overworked. Give yourself a time limit. Use big brushes and paint faster than you normally would. Keep going forward. Don't go back into an area and mess with it. This brings a memory to mind: I had lunch with a couple of accomplished watercolorists more than a decade ago, and one of them shared a quote I've always remembered: "I want my work to be like fresh sushi, not well-done beef."

Still Life In The Grass

oil 12x12 inches I painted this back in October on a sunny morning in our backyard. The painting has a great sense of early morning light, better seen in person. Demo For The High Desert

I'll have 20 linear feet of framed paintings on display, and about a hundred loose paintings. Come enjoy the music, art and sunshine!

Demo In Tarzana and a special commission

It started with a demonstration in Tarzana with an enthusiastic crowd, expert camera and lighting, and the coordinator even treated me to dinner between setup and demo! I don't usually take commissions, but early in the year I accepted a commission from the Caballero Family to paint property that has been in their family for generations. The Caballero's granddaughter was in my Kindergarten class quite a few years ago. This land and barn in Chino Hills, CA is now surrounded by houses. It's a precious gem that has been painted many times by myself and others. The painting is 24x36 inches which was good for me, and at Mrs. Caballero's request I added/invented lupine, poppies and sunflowers. Trying to put her memories on canvas and create a family heirloom, I felt very blessed to be able to do it.

Westlake Demo

oil 8x8 inches Purchase info here. What a great time I had teaching a three day workshop for Westlake Village Art Guild recently! This is the demo I did on the last day. I'm happy with how it turned out, though the alizarin in the pomegranate and strawberry doesn't photograph well. Oh well, it's better in person and that's what counts. IN OTHER NEWS: I have a few openings in my February workshop, and one opening in my March workshop. I hold these in my large home studio building in Upland, CA. oil 10X10 inches For a closer look and purchase info click here. Just got back from a trip to Idaho, and brought a summer cold home with me. Thankfully I'm back in my studio today. I had the opportunity to paint along the Snake River, and I'll post those paintings after they get a few tweaks. Meanwhile, for this painting from June I used a cool light source which resulted in the cool reds and pinks contrasting with the warm blue of the jar. I'm really happy with how this painting came out.
