This is a favorite of mine.  Painted jusst outside my studio door, MacIntosh apples.  I do think they are the prettiest apple!  Our Japanese Maple trees provided the delicate fall leaves.

This painting has returned from a local gallery show and is now available for purchase here directly.  This is the first in a series of four 10x10's which would hang nicely together.  Inspired from my own backyard; clippings from our pomegranate tree and heirloom apple tree.

I remember the day in November when I painted this little painting.  I had wiped off the first attempt which was quite a bit larger.  It came togther nicely in this size. The pom, apple and crooked little carrot were from our backyard.  This time of year, our pomegranate is just beginning to leaf out, it's almost time to plant carrot seeds, and the apple tree still has a ways to go before it is leafy.  Spring is coming!

I love the colors of Fall.  I had a great time with this one.  Though it may look tediously painted, I used a fairly large brush and painted the kernels in just a few steps.  This is on a cradled wood panel, ready to hang or frame as you like.

I cautiously held in person workshops in September and October.  It seems so long ago now!  Time has seemed to drag on with staying home so much.  I have had more time to focus on painting, so I'm thankful for that, but like everyone else, I'm hoping for a better year ahead.  I'm very fond of this little demo I did for my September workshop.  It's the design and color palette that I love.  Can you see the acorn in the front?  The other little round shapes are tiny dried pomagranates given to me by my friend, Mary Jo.  They find their way into many of my paintings.

Fall Burst

oil 9x12 inches Purchase info here. Alizarin Crimson, (which makes up the beautiful rich dark reds especially on the shadow side of the pom) just does not photograph well. It's a mystery as why, but I know I'm not the only one frustrated by this! Anyhow, this painting is better in person. I like how the leaf crumbles seem to burst out from the center of interest.

Harvest Clippings

I tried some new things in this painting; lots of canvas texture left to see and a bit of calligraphic outlining. The painting has the feel of fall I was after, so I'm quite happy with the way it turned out. UPCOMING EVENTS: This coming Saturday, Nov. 3rd is the opening of "Art From The Attic", a group show I'm part of. The public is invited. Studio C, Claremont. 6:00-9:00 pm.

A Little Enchantment -SOLD

I tried out Unbleached Titanium for the first time, and found it worked well in mixtures for the "white" of the pumpkin. To see more pumpkin paintings, look down to "labels" and click on pumpkin/s. Corny Baby Boo -a still life in oil -sold

oil 6x6 inches magnify/purchase info Last pumpkin painting for this season. Did you know these little white pumpkins are called "Baby Boos?" Me neither. I Googled it. If you're thinking about adding this to your Fall decor, it will be dry enough to ship in about 4-5 days. Looks even better in person. The camera doesn't pick up the subtle color shifts in the Baby Boo.

oil 6x6 inches magnify/purchase info Candy Corn is a lot of fun to paint. Painted loosely, those sweet little triangles can add charm and conjure up some happy Fall feelings. I'm especially happy with the unfinished look across the bottom. That's something I try for but don't always get. If you bid on "Perky Pumpkin" but were outbid, this one is "buy now". You can snatch it up for a bit less than the final sale price of "Perky Pumpkin." It needs about 4 days to dry before I can ship.

Still Life With Cinnamon Sticks

oil 8x16 inches magnify/purchase info Our apple tree yields these green apples. We don't know what kind they are, but they're great for pie making and painting. My neighbor gladly traded some of his pomegranates for a bag of our key limes. The cinnamon sticks fit with the fall feel and add line to the composition.

Pumpkin Patch -a plein air oil painting from Yucaipa

oil 10x8 inches magnify/purchase The Pumpkin Patch in Yucaipa is a big, big place with a huge variety of pumpkins. Pumpkins there come in white, gray, dark green, yellow green and of course various oranges. I liked this clean beautiful orange against the dark corner of the wagon. Then there was the backlighting!!! I love a backlit scene. It can be a bit tricky, but I think I got the feel of the light. This one took me about three hours. Left by five, got stuck in traffic so I nibbled on an apple. What a great day, and well worth the drive. I like this iPhone pic the best.

Cider Mill -a plein air painting from Oak Glen

oil 9x12 inches magnify/purchase All the apples are in and the cider mill is cranking away. I could smell the juice as I painted this at Snowline Orchard yesterday. Then I bought some Pink Lady apples and hot mini donuts. Yum. after a break I headed down to The Pumpkin Patch on Live Oak Canyon road to paint pumpkins.

Here's my subject and my easel. You can see my subject is not directly beyond my easel. I'll share this very practical tip I learned from Kim English: To get your panel in the shade, hold your hand up in front of you vertically. Turn your hand until it is in shade. That's the way to place your easel. Why didn't I think of that? Duh. Sometimes it means your subject is way off to one side from you, which it was in this case. At first I thought that might feel awkward, turning my head so much, but really once I start painting I don't even notice. Easier on the eyes, and better for getting values right.
