Posing Mini Apples

Posing Mini Apples  oil 8x8 inches
Purchase info here.

It's been a minute since I have posted here on Blogger.  If you have found this post, thank you!  In January I busied myself tremendously with the online "Strada Easel Challenge."  Alas, I did not win a coveted Strada Easel, but I did win lots of valuable daily practice and produced 29 paintings in 31 days.  As you might expect, I would much rather paint that take pics, edit, post, etc, so it will be a long time till you see them here or on my website.  My freshest most current work is always seen on Instagram.  I hope you can follow me there if you're not already.
Here you see a demonstration painting for one of my workshops.  I'm particularly fond of this one for it's crisp freshness.  You should see it in person!  Reasonably priced and your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Grapefruit

Grapefruit   oil 6x6 inches
Purchase info here.

The pink of this pink grapefruit turned out to be an illusive color.  It was hard to mix.  Why is it called grape fruit? It has no grapeness whatsoever.

Autumn Patterns

Autumn Patterns    oil 18x18 inches

Purchase info here.

Sometime in October I had this idea of a still life from bird's eye view.  With a tablecloth on the floor, I arranged objects to create a kind of rhythm.  It's all about pattern.  This painting is beautifully custom framed in a modern white wood frame about 1 1/2 inches wide with a smooth white finish.  Currently, it is on display in the front window of Mission Fine Art Gallery, San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Small Joys

Small Joys   oil 8x8 inches
Purchase info here.

I very much enjoy painting on a square format.  This design in particular is typical of my work.  The eye moves around the painting. Nothing is smack dab in the center.  The weight of the vase and sunflower is balanced by the tangerine and foliage above.  Objects are unequal distances apart, and there is a variety of sizes and shapes.  I think about these things when I compose a still life.  I hope you like it!

Abundance And Other Stuff

oil 11x11 Available at Square i Gallery in Claremont, CA. Call 909-625-2533 to inquire. After I finished the 30 Day Challenge in September, November continued to be a great month of painting. I completed four pieces for Square i Gallery's 11x11 Show for December. It was my first year entering this odd-sized show. This piece is painted on a wood panel 1/2 inch deep and stained on the sides. I prepped the panel with muslin and gesso, which made a great light toothed surface. It is ready to hang, but would also look great in a simple floater frame of your liking. Below you'll see my conglomerate photo of the September paintings (one missing) laid out on my studio floor. Also below, a dog portrait commission for a fellow artist. I loved painting Bounder! The client gave me a great photo to work from. It's 14x11 and was a gift for her husband. I love being part of surprising someone with a heart-felt gift! To commission a dog portrait, email me at karenwernerart@gmail.com

Backyard Apples

oil 6x8 inches Purchase info here. Painting number one from September's 30 paintings in 30 days for the Strada Easel Challenge. I didn't win an easel, but September gave me lots of practice and self-discipline! We don't know what kind of apple tree we have, but who cares! It produced hundreds of sweet, juicy apples last fall.

A Fruity Wine

oil 10x10 Purchase info here. You might wonder why I include wine bottles in my still life so often. They provide a strong vertical anchor to the design, taking the scene up and breaking up the top horizontal edge of the picture plane. The labels often echo the colors in fruit, creating unity and color harmony. The green bottles are often very very dark so they add value contrast. Wine is festive, and adds to the upbeat feel of the work. There you have it! IN OTHER NEWS: I'm really looking forward to demonstrating in Huntington Beach on Wednesday! For more info, see my December 30th post.

Fruit & Wine

oil 8x8 inches. Purchase info here. In these small still life paintings I like to have objects (or their shadows) go off the edges. This divides the negative space nicely resulting in different sizes and shapes. Often, I use a wine bottle to take the scene off the top. You might think I drink a lot of wine! No, I just find the bottles useful and pretty. Here's a painting that has a variety of fresh color and high value contrast. I'm quite happy with this one. I hope you like it.

Demo For Rancho

oil 12x12 inches This was a demonstration I painted from life for Associated Artists of the Inland Empire in Rancho Cucamonga. I was able to complete it mostly within the 1 1/2 hours allotted to me. It's a fresh-looking painting because I had to paint quickly and leave my strokes alone. This is a great exercise for any painter who wants their work to be loose and fresh, not overworked. Give yourself a time limit. Use big brushes and paint faster than you normally would. Keep going forward. Don't go back into an area and mess with it. This brings a memory to mind: I had lunch with a couple of accomplished watercolorists more than a decade ago, and one of them shared a quote I've always remembered: "I want my work to be like fresh sushi, not well-done beef."

Summer Fruit -SOLD

oil 8x8 inches Purchase info here. Here are a couple of my favorite things to paint; light shining through oranges and juicy ripe strawberries. It has been a rough few months for me with a reoccurring illness. I've been able to paint in between when up to it. I'm still not out of the woods, but hopeful. Meanwhile, some very GOOD news! My painting "Bloom & Sparkle" is on it's way to Fish Creek Wisconsin for The American Impressionist Society's National Exhibit. I feel very grateful to be included. Peninsula School Of Art, Fish Creek Wisconsin, Sept.27-Oct.28th. Also recently Associated Artists of The Inland Empire awarded me Best of Show in their Annual Fall Juried Show! More details on that in my next post.
