Here are two in a series of pet portraits I created for ART FROM THE ATTIC, a group show at STUDIO C, 260 W Bonita Ave, Claremont, CA. The show runs from November 3-28. Reception Saturday November 3, 6:00pm-9:00pm. The public is invited to attend. Come and enjoy a variety of works created by the "Upper Underground Artists", a group of artsy friends who have made art together for more than ten years. Participants include May Mar, Cindy Lopez, Carol Lima, Elizabeth Carr, Martha Cowan and myself.

Lucky Dog

oil 8x10 inches A while back, Lucky came to stay with us while his owner, Angie was traveling. He arrived wearing his tie to make a good first impression. He remained a gentleman the whole time. My dog loves it when Lucky comes over. If I say to my dog, 'You lucky dog!', she thinks Lucky is at the door. This painting will be a gift to Angie.

Riley Smiles

Riley the smiling Corgi belongs to my brother and his family. In the photo reference Riley is enjoying the desert with its red dirt. It must have been a cloudy day because there was no division of light and shadow, and yet a little reflection of the sky shone in Riley's eyes. I included most of his body to get that Corgy look; big ears and short little legs. I toned the canvas with thalo red rose and indian yellow which gave it a glow I'm really happy with. This is a late Christmas present. Merry Christmas, Bro! Hope you like it!

Did You Say "Walk?"

The current Daily Paintworks Challenge is to paint man's best friend and his/her favorite thing. This is my own little studio dog, Sandy. She's a lovable bundle of love, fur and dog kisses. She waits patiently while I paint and knows exactly the moment I'm finished. Here she is on my studio rug at just that moment hoping for her favorite thing: a walk. When I talk to her about anything she cocks her head like this. Yep, she's adorable. Oh, but back to the painting!

She's white, which I knew would be a challenge, and that maltese (silky) and poodle (curly) hair was a challenge too. Luckily for me, my studio lights both cool and warm showed up in her fur. The color seemed to tie in with the rug, so I used consistent paint application throughout to further unify the painting. A limited palette helped too: burnt umber, yellow ochre, alizarin, ultramarine, cad yellow medium and T white. I really enjoyed painting my own little sweetheart.

Gracie

Gracie is a little apricot toy poodle owned by my friend, Gwen. Gracie is sweet and happy, but not very smart. I guess not all dogs are created equal. Transparent red oxide, cad yellow medium and white worked well for the apricot color. I left quite a bit of the pink ground peeking through her fur so she'd relate to the background and not look like she was cut out and pasted on. Gwen has a new little dog for me to paint, but she has to grow up a bit first.

This little Yorkie is the third of five dog portraits commissioned by a dear friend of mine. You might remember the first two, "Ruthie" and "Abigail". I'm having so much fun painting these tiny little sweethearts!

A dear friend commissioned this portrait of her Yorkie, Abigail. Don't let the sweet name fool you...she is also referred to as "psycho dog". She goes right for the face, licking your ears and planting her tongue on your front teeth before y' know what hit 'ya. She keeps the whole pack of five pint-sized dogs upset with her deranged antics. For the painting, I capitalized on her crooked mouth, and kept my brushstrokes energetic....like the dog.

This chihuahua with her unusual markings belongs to a dear friend of mine. She's named after the Baby Ruth candy bar and attracts attention wherever she goes. My friend worked hard at socializing and training her. As a result, she is a little sweetie-pie. I hope I captured her sweetness.
