Pear Sings Bass

Pear Sings Bass  oil 8x10
Purchase info here.

Years ago I had the pleasure of singing for several years in an acapella choir.  That's a choir of voices only-no instuments to accompany the voices.  In order to stay on pitch, the director taught us to listen to the men singing bass. I sang alto but then got switched to soprano.  In other words, I was a peach, then became a cherry.  I wish you could see this painting in person.

Demo In Green & Red

Demo In Green & Red  oil 6x6 inches
Purchase info here.

This little assortment of shapes gave me a good subject for demonstration during my January workshop.  I taught five workshops in five months, and I must say I'm a bit burned out!  Are you looking forward to summertime?  I sure am!  If you purchase this painting, you'll find that it's much prettier in person.

Late Night Fruit

Late Night Fruit  oil 6x6 inches
Purchase info here.

Here's a little quick study I did for a class.  This painting illustrates the fact that you can render form in a very simple way amd at the same time make a bold statement about light and shadow.

Hello, Pear

Hello, Pear  oil 8x8 inches
Purchase info here.

Pears will really challenge a painter with their subtle color shifts and delicate shape.  When I first started painting these small oil paintings over 10 years ago, I struggled to get the pear shape right, often ended up overworking the color shifts and wiped off many a pear.  I painted this as a demo for a friend who had never worked in oils and wanted to see my process.  It's demo priced, so click through the purchase link if you've wanted one of my paintings but are looking for a deal.

Violets & A Pear

oil 8x8 inches Get a closer look and purchase information here. Oops! Here's one more painting from April that I never posted! This little pot of African Violets are from my kitchen. This is a pretty little painting, especially seen in person all because of that lovely subtle shadow.

Still Life With A Knife

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info Here's another painting I reworked. Back in October I painted this as a demonstration for the Tustin Art Association. At the time, I was in the midst of an unexpected long recovery from oral surgery. Turns out I don't paint well with jaw pain. Go figure. Originally I had an empty glass bottle in the back to add a vertical going off the top edge. It just didn't work, so I painted it out, and fiddled with a few edges here and there. If you like it, check out the price. Very low for an 8x8.

Imposing Pears -SOLD

oil 6x6 inches magnify/purchase info I love the subtle color shifts in pears. In the past I've found them very difficult to paint well, but I've been working on letting color blend on the canvas. I'm happy with how that worked here. I mean applying paint with deliberate brushstrokes into the previous strokes, not blending it after the paint is applied. Does that make sense? These pears are ganging up on the little grape, or cherry, whichever you like because it was a grape that looked like a cherry. :-)

Leftovers -a still life painting in oil

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info Number 16 of 31 paintings in 31 days. I'm sorry it's so long between posts. Life has been hectic lately! Though I have been painting, I haven't been sitting down at the computer to post. This painting is an assortment of leftovers from my still life workshop. There is something refreshing about orange and green together. Grapes thrown in for a dark value.

Pear & Grapes -a still life painting in oil

oil 6x6 inches magnify/purchase What would happen if I painted the next painting using mostly the leftover colors mixed from the painting I just finished? Here it is, painted right after "The Entryway" without cleaning my palette. Kinda different. It's loose and it was a fun experiment. Have a great weekend, everybody!
