In January our Navel Orange tree gave us sweet oranges that found their way into several of my paintings.  Orange, red and pink together make a color combination that I love.

Last August I enjoyed painting this sweet little gem while sitting in my friend's gallery, Studio C in Claremont.  I painted a series of small still life with items I carried in from home each day.  This is my favorite.  The framing on this piece is classy looking: finely finished burgundy/black with a gold lip.  Ready to hang where you have a small space that needs a fine looking pop of color.

Here are some of my favorite items for painting arranged in my favorite design: cruciform.  This design form goes off all four edges of the picture space, to create interesting negative shapes (empty spaces).

Years ago I had the pleasure of singing for several years in an acapella choir.  That's a choir of voices only-no instuments to accompany the voices.  In order to stay on pitch, the director taught us to listen to the men singing bass. I sang alto but then got switched to soprano.  In other words, I was a peach, then became a cherry.  I wish you could see this painting in person.

Here's a little quick study I did for a class.  This painting illustrates the fact that you can render form in a very simple way amd at the same time make a bold statement about light and shadow.

Coming up with a title for this one was more difficult than painting it.  I asked my accountant (husband), and went with what he said.  Why didn't he inventory the cherries too?  This was a demonstration I did on Zoom for the Anaheim Art Association in September.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Here's a little demonstration I did for a painting class in a gallery.  Lighting is so important no matter where you paint.  Too much direct light on your canvas and palette, and you'll unknowingly paint too dark.  Conversely, if you paint in deep shade or dim light, you'll paint too light.  In this circumstance I had a skylight above me giving me too much light, causing me to paint darker than I normally would.  Nevertheless, I like the result!

I painted this quick little piece as a class demonstration.  You can't beat painting still life for learning how to render the 3D form of objects.  It's very possible to paint simply and directly with a large brush and still get a realistic look.  No need to noodle away with tiny brushes!

What is it about backlighting that adds so much interest?  It could be the shadow shapes that get bigger as they come toward the viewer.  This painting was a lot of fun.  It's a strong design that I might use again with other objects.

oil 12x12 inches I'm delighted to announce the acceptance of this piece into The American Impressionist Society's 21st Annual National Juried Exhibition. Illume Gallery, St. George, Utah October 22-November 21, 2020. I'm especially excited to be included for two reasons: St. George is a drivable distance, so I'll be able to attend the AIS festivities and paint-outs for the first time. Here's hoping COVID has died down by then! Secondly, this is the 5th consecutive AIS show I have been included in, so in the fall I can apply for AIS Signature Status.
