Here's a crazy bit of color to start the new year!  I hope 2023 is off to a good start for you.  I painted this back in June.  In the back of the painting you'll see a small painting in a gold frame that was done by my friend, May.  It had been almost a year since she'd gone on to Heaven.  I loved the color scheme of her little painting, so I looked for objects in my studio that fit the scheme.  I enjoyed painting while thinking of my friend.

Fruit On Blue

I paint that first, then work my way outward to the white of the rind, then the peel itself, noting whether they are in light or shadow. I have openings in my June 10 and 11 workshop! Patty's Pitcher -a still life in oil

Continuing with the orange and green color scheme, this is a collection of various objects I especially enjoy painting. Variety of texture is something I consider oftentimes. Here we have glass, ceramic, wood (kinda), flower and paper. The greeting card gives more solidity to the horizontal plane the objects share.

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info Sometimes coming up with a title and then something to say about the painting is more difficult than painting the painting! I'll just say it was the yummy color of the cup that excited me about this set up.

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase Monday night's demo for the Orange Art Association. I painted much faster than I usually do because time was short, then finished it yesterday in my studio. I had used gray drapery which allows me to swing it warm or cool, and in this case violet. I painted the shadows first, then at home had to adjust them so they read right with the cloth in light. Someone asked me about how to determine the color of your shadows. Here's my usual reasoning, although not a hard and fast rule. Consider the local color of the object the shadow is falling on (the cloth, grayish lavender). If the light source is warm (spotlight bulb), the shadow will be cooler (temp.), darker (value), and a bit duller (intensity). So for the shadows I used hardly any white (darker), added more blue (cooler), and a bit more of the complement yellow (duller). I use the same principle with watercolor. With practice you can SEE what color your shadows are. Ask yourself how the shadow color compares to the part of the same object in light. Darker, cooler, duller?

oil 8x10 magnify/purchase Saturday's Chino Art Festival was a hot one! 95 degrees. Even so, I met some really nice folks, had good sales and managed to get some paint on canvas. I made s few changes to this once I got it home. Thanks to all who stopped by. Looking forward to the BALBOA ART WALK ON MAY 18th. Sunshine and cool ocean breezes!

Floral Bowl- sold

oil 6x6 inches click here to bid This ceramic piece is a favorite of mine. It has three little tubes in the center you stick the flower stems into. When we went to San Diego recently our friend, Angie house and dog sat for us. She likes to keep busy, so there are always surprises when we come home. (One time she built a gate!) This time I found this cheerful little display in my studio. I added some green sprigs to break up the round cluster, and it looked like a painting.

Festival Daisies-sold

What a beautiful day on the City Hall lawn in Chino! We enjoyed great music and temps in the 80's with some exciting gusts of wind in the afternoon. I painted this potted daisy grabbed from my back patio, some good friends came by and I sold several small oils. What can get better than this? You can see my set up in the snapshot below.

Framed oils, baskets of oils, and a pile of loose watercolors added up to about 150 paintings. My hubby and I are tired from the shlepping of stuff! Just like traveling, I bring too much stuff!

My long-time friend, Carol in Oklahoma is a music teacher. She sings, plays the flute and piano, and teaches elementary music. What a talent! She requested a painting with a flute incorporating red. Wow! This was darn hard...but I like a good challenge. My favorite aspect are the little notes of red reflected in the flute.

Okay, so this was practice for the next one with a flute! The blue is a bit much for Carol. (I don't blame her!) So now it's up for auction...anybody want a flute painting?

Spring is here in Southern California. In spite of the recent colder temps some of my bulbs are blooming and the calla lilies too. Must...paint...flower!
