My current favorite mug filled with camomile tea.  The variety of yellows set off by the lilac background is positively yummy to me!  How 'bout the cast shadows on that leaf, and then on the mug?!  I love the way this painting turned out!  If you consider purchasing, it will need a floater frame.  That's a frame that doesn't cover 1/4 to 1/2 inch of the painting all the way around as a standard frame does.  Most small paintings need floaters.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Here's a little demonstration I did for a painting class in a gallery.  Lighting is so important no matter where you paint.  Too much direct light on your canvas and palette, and you'll unknowingly paint too dark.  Conversely, if you paint in deep shade or dim light, you'll paint too light.  In this circumstance I had a skylight above me giving me too much light, causing me to paint darker than I normally would.  Nevertheless, I like the result!

I painted this one as a class demo back in June.  At this point, I hardly remember the details of that day!  Life has had its ups and downs since.  I'm sure it's the same for you.  Some slices of life are sweet, and others are tough to chew and hard to digest!  No matter what, we can choose to be thankful and make it a good day.

Tea By Candlelight

One of the great benefits of art posted on social media is the way one artist can inspire other artists.  In November an artist I follow had painted a glowing candle.   Here's mine.  I especially enjoyed capturing the light glowing through the wax at the top of the candle.  That teacup is part of my wedding registry dishes from 47 years ago!  The floribunda roses are wide open, becoming a jumble of petals.

I really enjoyed painting this piece because of the variety of greens. I also experimented with a bit of calligraphy at the finish. Below you'll see a picture of my set up. Tea Time And A Dog Portrait

oil 11x11 inches Purchase info here. Here are some of my favorite things to paint: liquid in a cup (tea or coffee), lemons, old books, and flowers. This is the last of the four 11x11 paintings I did in November. Below, an easel shot of one of my favorite dog commissions: "Shadow." I didn't get to meet this dog, but he sure looks sweet! The photo reference was especially unique, with very warm afternoon light coming from below the dog's head.

On A White Tablecloth -a still life painting in oil

oil 12x12 inches magnify/purchase info This painting was inspired by Armin Hansen. On Sunday we visited the Pasadena Museum of California Art to take in the Armin Hansen Exhibit. I was blown away by the power of his paintings of Monterey Fisherfolk but also the few still lifes. Powerful design, bold color and thick paint. This was painted by natural light from a window behind the table. I used the following pigments: cad lemon, alizarin, ultramarine blue, thalo blue, permanent rose and T white. (Plus my pre-mixed greens as discussed in previous posts.) IN OTHER NEWS: This coming Sunday I'll demonstrate for the Loma Linda Art Association. The public is welcome. 2:00-4:00pm. Ginger Jar

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase I don't know anything about ginger jars, but I like the shape and the blue. Part of my "on a ledge" series. The yellow is a bit more subtle in person...kinda buttery. Yum.

Still Life With Crimson Ribbon -sold

oil 12x12 inches magnify/purchase Reds and violets with greens seem to be one of my favorite color schemes. This one was kind of "gaggy" until I added the earthy vintage photo and especially the lemons. The lemons provide happy relief from all the reds and greens. The main players in this piece belonged to my mother; the photo of her as a young child, the iridescent tea cup and the flower pot. Think I should keep the painting? No, because I have the objects themselves. It's the act of painting them that's the real joy for me. The BALBOA ART WALK IS THIS SUNDAY! I'm really looking forward to the cool temps, the music and the happy crowd! If you're in So Cal I hope you'll come and say hi. I'll be pretty close to where the ferry lands on the island. Turn left as you walk off the ferry and walk along the sea wall to Pearl Street. I'll have 20 feet of display space. Wooo-hooo!!!
