Measuring 15x15 inches, this painting is one of my comparatively larger works. In May our roses bloom like crazy.  The oranges and pinks look lovely together.  I wish you could see this in person.

Using objects at hand, this still life includes roses and an heirloom apple from our garden.  The wine bottle is from a local winery.  This is one of my favorite recent pieces.  I love the color harmony of reds, yellow green and gray violet.

Last August I enjoyed painting this sweet little gem while sitting in my friend's gallery, Studio C in Claremont.  I painted a series of small still life with items I carried in from home each day.  This is my favorite.  The framing on this piece is classy looking: finely finished burgundy/black with a gold lip.  Ready to hang where you have a small space that needs a fine looking pop of color.

I enjoyed painting the horizontal version of this subject so much that I thought it would work as a vertical as well.  The image is a bit blurry, but the painting in person is crisp where it needs to be.  If you purchase one of my paintings, your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Study After Renoir

In February I completed a commissioned master copy of Renoir's "Discarded Roses."  The painting pictured here is a small study done in advance of the larger painting, 16x20 (below).  This preliminary study allowed me to work out design and shapes, but most importantly color.  I researched Renoir's palette, which turned out to be quite different from mine.  It included lots of Viridian and Naples Yellow, both of which I generally avoid.  I had to ignore my own color harmony sensibilities.  I took a few subtle liberties with flower shapes. The collector was very happy with the finished painting.

For a few days in January I repeatedly walked past this scene just off my kitchen slider; my mother's patio set from the sixties, an angel statue I had given her, and the last few roses left after winter pruning.  The light shining through the little white pitcher and rose petals caught my eye day after day until I set up to paint it.  See the tiny skull shape on the far right?  It's a little pot with succulent, a little thank you gift from a kind person who took a workshop from me.

One of the great benefits of art posted on social media is the way one artist can inspire other artists.  In November an artist I follow had painted a glowing candle.   Here's mine.  I especially enjoyed capturing the light glowing through the wax at the top of the candle.  That teacup is part of my wedding registry dishes from 47 years ago!  The floribunda roses are wide open, becoming a jumble of petals.

This is more of my work from April.  It was a very warm day, but the roses and lavender were in full bloom.  I had this beautiful little pot of white mums.  Compelled to do some plein air painting in spite of Covid lockdown and the heat, I positioned myself in shade under both an avocado tree and a beach umbrella.  I had a great time and was happy with the result.  The next day was cooler, so I was able to paint this lovely subject again from a closer vantage point.  That one is coming up next.

April floribundas from my yard, painted outside on my kitchen porch.  My mother's old patio set depicted dates back to the sixties.  In high school I took geometry during summer school.  I remember sitting in one of these chairs for many days copying "theorums."  At the time, it was the only math class I got an A in because it was visual, and I got to "draw."  At this point in my life I can't even tell you what a theorum is!

oil 12x12 inches I'm delighted to announce the acceptance of this piece into The American Impressionist Society's 21st Annual National Juried Exhibition. Illume Gallery, St. George, Utah October 22-November 21, 2020. I'm especially excited to be included for two reasons: St. George is a drivable distance, so I'll be able to attend the AIS festivities and paint-outs for the first time. Here's hoping COVID has died down by then! Secondly, this is the 5th consecutive AIS show I have been included in, so in the fall I can apply for AIS Signature Status. Kim's Arrangement

oil 10x8 SOLD Painting roses is a challenge. It's difficult enough to get their complex structure down in paint. The structure may be right, but they can still look stiff, like a plastic rose. I really want to express their transparency, delicacy and softness. In this painting I got the roses I was going for.
