On a cool overcast morning in June, I gathered these items and painted in my backyard.  In Southern California we call this weather "June Gloom."  June gloom has its own beauty; colors seem clean and clear.  I enjoyed myself, painting and listening to the birds.  Though the natural light gave the scene almost non-existent shadows, it has a cool feel and color harmony that I'm quite pleased with.  This painting is so much better in person!

Sometime in October I had this idea of a still life from bird's eye view.  With a tablecloth on the floor, I arranged objects to create a kind of rhythm.  It's all about pattern.  This painting is beautifully custom framed in a modern white wood frame about 1 1/2 inches wide with a smooth white finish.  Currently, it is on display in the front window of Mission Fine Art Gallery, San Juan Capistrano, CA.

Charleston, SC April 1-30

I'm thrilled to announce that my backyard plein air piece has been juried into the American Impressionist Society's 5th Annual National Small Works Showcase in Charleston, SC April 1-30.  This is my sixth consecutive acceptance into an AIS National Show.  I'm truly grateful to be included again.  There were 1,357 entries, and 154 were chosen.

oil 12x12 inches I'm delighted to announce the acceptance of this piece into The American Impressionist Society's 21st Annual National Juried Exhibition. Illume Gallery, St. George, Utah October 22-November 21, 2020. I'm especially excited to be included for two reasons: St. George is a drivable distance, so I'll be able to attend the AIS festivities and paint-outs for the first time. Here's hoping COVID has died down by then! Secondly, this is the 5th consecutive AIS show I have been included in, so in the fall I can apply for AIS Signature Status. oil 8x8 inches Purchase info here. The paintings I've been posting lately are all from September's Strada Easel Challenge: paint from life every day of September. One of my favorite color combinations is here; pink/red and orange. Then I decided on green as a secondary color complement. Thus, color harmony with a sweet subject. I have a collection of coffee cups. This "50's Cup" as I call it, brings to mind some good old days. Mom drinking Folgers poured from the Farberware electric percolator. She would ask me to put in the half & half until it was "just the right color."

In the last few hours of the art show I did this quick sketch--remnants of my morning coffee. I was pretty tired by then, and I think the looseness reveals that. As I toned my canvas with a mid-value burnt umber, I realized how much it resembled coffee! The loose handling and burnt umber peeking through gave the painting an earthy feel. Maybe I'll do more burnt umber grounds. I like earthy.
