Some geraniums from my yard with local strawberries.  This vintage sugar bowl makes a set with the creamer in my previous post.  The shine gives off some nice reflections.  I painted this in March.

Demo In Tarzana and a special commission

It started with a demonstration in Tarzana with an enthusiastic crowd, expert camera and lighting, and the coordinator even treated me to dinner between setup and demo! I don't usually take commissions, but early in the year I accepted a commission from the Caballero Family to paint property that has been in their family for generations. The Caballero's granddaughter was in my Kindergarten class quite a few years ago. This land and barn in Chino Hills, CA is now surrounded by houses. It's a precious gem that has been painted many times by myself and others. The painting is 24x36 inches which was good for me, and at Mrs. Caballero's request I added/invented lupine, poppies and sunflowers. Trying to put her memories on canvas and create a family heirloom, I felt very blessed to be able to do it.

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info When finding a subject outdoors I look for light and shadow. It was a clear morning, when light is strong and clean. I got excited about the shadow moving across the chair. The basket holds limes from our tree. Did you know that fully ripe limes are yellow? This is #4 in the Strada Challenge: 31 paintings in 31 days.

Lemon With Geraniums -a still life painting in oil -SOLD

oil 8x8 inches magnify/purchase info Painting a still life seemed extra refreshing after so many paintings from photos. The lemon and geraniums are from our backyard. On Saturday the Redlands newspaper had a nice write up about me. My demonstration and one day workshop for the Redlands Art Association are coming up next week.

Surrounding Red

watercolor and gouache approx. 12x9 inches magnify/purchase A break from my ledge series. I don't have a good shot of my recent ledge piece, so I offer this little watercolor in the meantime. I did this one a while back at my Wednesday night paint/talk/laugh group. I picked up the geranium and lavender at Home Depot on the way, then borrowed the pots and glass from my friend, Martha's still life collection. Why the little oil can? I aimed to combine contrasting textures: plant, ceramic, glass and metal.

oil 10x8 inches not for sale at this time Finally, here's the first piece I did on Arches oil paper. Pictured below is how it looked before I wiped out the drapery several times. The paper took a beating and held up well. Still, the paint seems to die into the paper. After four paintings, going back to canvas sounds pretty good.

Unfinished stage. I masked the edges with tape before painting. Makes a nice "matted" look.

Red Show -sold

oil 6x6 inches click here to bid I liked the blue-green band on the tea cup as a foil to all the red. The yellow-greens put in some extra kick. Adding back in cad red medium to my palette seemed necessary for the geranium and it gave me cleaner color than I got in "Cherries Meet The Giant Peach."

Flute Commission SOLD

Here's my second flute painting for my friend Carol in Oklahoma. (Click on "flute" in labels to see the first one.) She requested red with a taupe background. When I painted the flute I had to take frequent breaks because it took so much tedious concentration. I hope I didn't burn up any brain cells...I don't have any to spare! Too bad the flute part is a bit blurry. For every commission I do, the deal is when the painting is finished the client is under no obligation to buy it. So if Carol passes, this one will be at auction on Ebay.

Geranium Deja-vu

The day after painting "Four O'clock Geraniums" the flowers were still fresh, and I loved the entire set-up, so why not paint the whole thing? My favorite parts are the arching stems and fallen petals and bits. I'd be interested to know which one you like best, yesterday's or today's. By the way, if I spelled deja-vu wrong, please tell me. I looked it up in my 1970 pocket dictionary, and it wasn't there. Imagine that!

Four O'Clock Geraniums

You might ask what does a clock have to do with a jar of flowers? I don't know, but I liked the combo of colors, the glass face with the glass jar and other stuff. It may be a bit odd to have it down in the corner, but maybe it makes the painting interesting being obviously part of a larger scene. We have a heavy cloud cover here today so the photo is not the best, and a bit blurry too.

I probably have an endless supply of geraniums in my yard--might as well paint them! I tried to paint them simply though they are a complicated flower. I'm really happy with how the jar turned out.
